To celebrate the 100 year anniversary of the Royal Air Force, The Mall Luton will be holding a special Remembrance Day event on Saturday 27^th and Sunday 28^th October to launch their 2018 Poppy Appeal.

The Mall Luton will play host to a British Royal Air Force fighter aircraft, the Supermarine Spitfire, which will be displayed throughout the weekend in Central Square. Lytham St Annes’ Spitfire Ground Display Team have restored a full size replica Spitfire Mark IX and help educate the public on the realities of fighting in the RAF during WW2. For any budding future pilots, the cockpit of the spitfire will be open for viewing and photos* between 11am and 2pm each day, for a £5 donation.

Bespoke Spitfire team merchandise will be available to buy throughout the Poppy Appeal weekend, with all proceeds going towards the Lytham St Annes’ Spitfire Ground Display Team flying aircraft programme.

As well as the aircraft display, The Mall Luton will be opening their annual Poppy pop up shop in centre, in partnership with the local Royal British Legion team. Last year they raised over £23,000, and they are hoping to exceed this in 2018.

Local community groups will also be in attendance during The Mall’s 2018 Poppy Appeal, including 4^th Stopsley Rainbows and Brownies who will be collecting for the Royal British Legion by creating a giant poppy out of £1 coins. They will also be offering poppy crafts for the younger community in Central Square between 10am and 4pm on Saturday 3^rd November.

Lavinia Douglass, Marketing Manager at The Mall Luton, says: “We are thrilled to be welcoming the iconic Royal Aircraft Spitfire to The Mall Luton, launching our annual Poppy Appeal. The Poppy Appeal is always a special part of our Mall Cares calendar, but an even more significant one this year with the Centenary anniversary.”

Half Term Centenary Celebrations

As well as the Poppy Appeal weekend events, Luton Borough Council will be in The Mall offering children the chance to be involved with the centenary celebrations during the October half term. Luton Arts Collective, Flamingo Arts, will be holding workshops on Monday 22^nd and Wednesday 24^th October where children can make their own light-up poppy, plus receive a goody bag with instructions for how to make more poppies at home.

2.30pm – 3.30pm
4.00pm – 5.00pm

A special Remembrance Sunday event will take place on 11^th November at 6pm, where the children are invited to lay their light-up poppies on the steps of Luton Town Hall. There will be music, poetry and projections, along with complimentary hot chocolate and refreshments for all the children involved and their families.
