Weatherfield Academy In Dunstable To Unveil New School Building
Children at Weatherfield Academy Special School in Dunstable will soon benefit from a brand new classroom that will be unveiled on 5th March at 2pm.
Weatherfield Academy Special School caters solely for students with special educational needs, aged between 7 and 19. With pupil numbers expected to rise to 142 in the next year due to housing growth and SEND pupil numbers rising, more room is needed to ensure that the school can continue to provide outstanding teaching and a nurturing environment for all of its pupils.
The new purpose-built and sustainable classroom will provide the additional space that is so desperately needed for the school’s post 16 pupils. Housing both learning and vocational areas, the new teaching area has two open plan spaces, with a small storage room to the rear. Constructed by Green Modular, who are market leaders in their use of affordable and sustainable materials, the classroom is externally clad with sustainable Western Red Cedar and features windows and doors made from 90% recycled aluminium. With a warm, modern and spacious feel, the new classroom provides 64m2 of internal space and has been designed to create a calm, yet stimulating, learning environment.
Head Teacher, Joe Selmes, comments: “As a school we have a vision of providing the best possible opportunities for pupils with SEND in Central Bedfordshire and these new facilities will make an enormous difference to our post 16 pupils. The new classroom will allow our learners to work on their vocational and independence skills, which is a crucial area of the pupils’ development.
My sincere thanks and gratitude go to Green Modular for constructing the new facilities in such a sustainable manner, the Connolly Foundation for the grant we received, and the Friends of Weatherfield for their fundraising to support this project. I look forward to officially opening the new facilities on Tuesday 5th March and being able to provide the learning facilities our pupils deserve, giving them every opportunity to become the best person they can be.”
