The Town Mayor and Mayoress of Dunstable, Cllrs Peter Hollick and Ann Sparrow, attended the Anglia in Bloom Awards Ceremony in Gorleston, near Great Yarmouth, last Monday (6 September) along with members of Dunstable in Bloom and were delighted to collect a number of awards.
Dunstable In Bloom Winners
The Council and its partners including Dunstable in Bloom, Weatherfield Academy, Incredible Edible and the Market Cross Pub were presented with the following awards:
- Overall gold medal for the town
- Winner of the regional ‘Best Park’ award for Grove House Gardens
- Winner of the regional ‘Best Young People’s Project’ award for Weatherfield Academy
- Gold Medal for Priory Gardens
- Gold Medal for Market Cross Pub
- Silver Gilt Medal for Dunstable Cemetery
- Bronze Medal for Old Palace Lodge
Incredible Edible were shortlisted as finalists in the best ‘Grow Your Own’ project and Weatherfield Academy were also shortlisted as finalists in the ‘Best Special Needs Garden’
The Town Council’s Town Clerk and Chief Executive, David Ashlee commented on how proud he was that such a magnificent community effort has resulted in such fantastic success for the town.
The Chairman of Dunstable in Bloom, Hugh Garrod added ‘Our success this year is testament to the hard work of our volunteers, community groups, schools, local businesses and Town Council staff. I am delighted that we have retained our Gold Medal again and am very pleased that Weatherfield Academy received a special award’.
The Town Council’s Chair of the Grounds and Environmental Services Committee, Cllr Liz Jones, said ‘I was delighted to attend the award ceremony to help collect the Best Park award for Grove House Gardens and the gold and silver gilt awards for Priory Gardens and Dunstable Cemetery. These awards recognise the hard work that the Town Council puts into maintaining and developing these wonderful green spaces’
Anglia in Bloom is the eastern regions premier horticultural and environmental campaign and the judges spent a whole day in Dunstable in July. They were taken on a tour of the town to view all the floral displays, public open spaces including Blows Down and the many wonderful outdoor community and school projects.
The Eastern region covers 6 counties including Bedfordshire, Hertfordshire, Cambridgeshire, Essex, Norfolk and Suffolk.
