Luton Dunstable Busway Celebrates 5 Years with Free Event And Giveaway
The Luton Dunstable Busway is commemorating its fifth birthday with a free public event at the Luton Station Interchange between 8am-2pm on Monday 24th September. A celebratory cake will be cut between 11am and 12 noon.
The council’s Travel Choices Team will be attending to help people to plan their journeys and increase their activity levels. STARS (Bedfordshire Sustainable Travel Access to Railway Stations) will be offering an exciting line-up of activities to promote walking, cycling and bus use to train stations across Bedfordshire, and those who complete travel plans with the team will be given a Starbucks drinks voucher for use at the Interchange store. Dr Bike will also be on hand to give out free bike health checks, and the local police will be doing free security marking.
Commuters using the Luton Interchange will have the chance to join the celebration in various ways. Birthday cards will be handed out at random to 600 bus passengers. Each will contain a free journey voucher, and one lucky individual will find a £100 Luton Mall shopping voucher in the envelope.
Over 10.5million passengers have used the busway made since its launch. The busway is run by Central Bedfordshire Council and Luton Council with Arriva, Centrebus and Grant Palmer providing services. Part of the busway was built along the disused Luton-Dunstable railway line. Services are provided on specially-adapted buses capable of running on the guideway at speeds of up to 50mph, and also on public roads.
The busway links the Dunstable/Houghton Regis and Luton town centres in just 15 minutes, with services every seven minutes at peak times. It still remains the second longest busway in the world and the longest in an urban environment. A shared path for walking, cycling, and maintenance access was created to run along the busway’s whole length.
Over the past five years the councils have provided two additional bus stops at Chaul End and Jeans Way, surfaced the shared use path, and provided low level LED lighting along the path.
The £90 million Luton-Dunstable Busway was launched back on 25 September 2013.The busway is 13.4km long, including the 7.4km of guideway that runs on the disused Luton-Dunstable railway line. Services run from 5.30am until late on weekdays, and from around 6.30am on Saturdays and 8.30am on Sundays/Bank Holidays, although since August the A Service between Dunstable and Luton has been operating 24/7, running half-hourly between midnight and the main service timetable starting.
