Central Bedfordshire Council encourages residents to recycle this Christmas

Residents in Central Bedfordshire are being reminded by the council to recycle the additional waste they accumulate over this festive period.

According to Recycle Now, the Christmas period means an estimated 3 million tonnes of waste is generated in the UK which includes approximately 300,000 tonnes of card and packaging alone.

All paper, including gift wrap can be put in recycling bins, provided that it isn’t shiny metallic or has glitter on. If in doubt, test it out with the ‘scrunch test’ – if you scrunch the paper in your hand and the paper stays in a ball then it can be recycled; if it springs back then unfortunately it can’t be recycled, but don’t throw it away try and salvage it for next year’s gift. All cardboard including the packaging from online shopping is acceptable but please make sure any polystyrene is placed in the general waste bin.

In the UK, we buy 10 million turkeys, take home around 370 million mince pies and 25 million Christmas puddings. We ask residents to try to keep food waste to a minimum all year round, but that’s particularly important at times such as Christmas and New Year. If you receive a weekly food waste collection, then please recycle any food scraps. Alternatively Love Food Hate Waste have loads of recipes and great ideas that use up those leftovers to create other tasty meals or snacks.

Real Christmas trees will also be collected for recycling between Monday 7th and Friday 18th January 2019 inclusive. Residents simply need to place their Christmas tree separately next to their recycling bin (not in any bin or bag) on the relevant recycling bin collection day. Trees should be no taller than 6ft, with trunks no greater than 3-inches in diameter and all decorations need to be removed. During this period, no other garden waste will be accepted.

Councillor Budge Wells, Deputy Executive Member for Community Services at Central Bedfordshire, said: “Whilst the Christmas and New Year celebrations are clearly a time to have fun, we are asking residents to think about the environmental impact and do their bit to help reduce waste and increase recycling.

“Residents can visit our website to see information about what can go into their kerbside bins and what items can be taken to one of our Household Waste Recycling Centres. These are open every single day except on the three Bank Holidays and on Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve they are open until 1pm.”
