Passengers at Luton Luton Airport on Wednesday, December 12, will be serenaded by a Christmas choir with a difference.
Two choirs made up of local people who are living with dementia, their family carers, and volunteers, will be singing familiar festive tunes.
The Young@Heart dementia café and the Stopsley Singing Café have teamed up for the special event which will help prove that  people who are living with conditions including Alzheimer’s disease are still able to play a full role in society. Together they are known as Friends With Voices.
Maria Collins, of Young@Heart, and the home care company Home Instead Luton and Central Bedfordshire, has organised the event.
She said: “Singing is a proven way that people with dementia can reconnect with their memories.
“Music has a special way of helping people to remember events and times past – and because Christmas carols are deeply ingrained in all our memories, it is an exceptionally powerful way of reconnecting.
“It is wonderful that London Luton Airport has allowed us to sing on their premises, because it will also allow us to deliver a powerful message that people with dementia  deserve to continue to play their part in society.”
Maria also notes that Christmas time is one of the times of the year when family members first notice the symptoms of dementia in their relatives.
Maria said: “When sons and daughters visit their elderly relatives and parents over the festive seasons, they notice changes in behaviour. It is something we should all be aware of.”

Friends With Voices is also being helped on the day by Teela Hughes, from Music24 and John Peace, of the Stopsley Singing Café.
