£20m Dunstable Leisure Centre Revamp Moves Forward
Plans Submitted For £20m Dunstable Leisure Centre Revamp
Central Bedfordshire Council has submitted a planning application for the £20.1million redevelopment of Dunstable Leisure Centre.
The public consultation period will be open for approximately 21 days under planning reference CB/16/04283. The submitted plans and relevant documentation can be viewed on the Council’s website, while consultation boards will be available to view at Dunstable Leisure Centre.
Due to the nature of the overall development, a decision on the planning application should be made within eight weeks.
Within that time, members of the public can comment on the application, but only on aspects that relate to planning aspects will be taken into consideration when the application is determined, such as amenity, privacy, design, noise, traffic or access.
This follows a 12-week public consultation in which the Council asked for feedback on proposals to comprehensively redevelop the existing building to include new leisure facilities, a relocated Dunstable Library currently at Vernon Place, a Citizens Advice Bureau (CAB) facility, as well as adult day care services for adults with disabilities and Dunstable and District Disabled Sports (DADDS).
Cllr Ian Dalgarno, Deputy Executive Member for Community Services, said: “Our aim is to reinvigorate the leisure and cultural offer at the heart of Dunstable, to better cater for the needs of the town’s growing population. Taking a unique approach, what we intend to build is much more than just a leisure centre, with public and community services all under one roof, alongside new and improved health and fitness facilities.
“The plans set out how the existing building will be partially demolished, rebuilt and completely transformed, inside and out; while the striking computer generated designs provide a tantalising view of the modern and vibrant facility that will emerge to enhance the experience and opportunities for local people.
“Having already received strong support and positive feedback from the community, I’m convinced that these plans will give people even more cause for optimism, particularly when set within the overall picture of regeneration and investment that is helping to revitalise Dunstable.”
