New Dunstable Leisure Centre Progressing Well
As you are probably aware, the leisure centre in Dunstable is being redeveloped in a £20.1 million project which is part of Central Bedfordshire council’s commitment to enabling better health and wellbeing for all residents and also their ambition for Dunstable and the town’s overall growth and regeneration.
The redeveloped centre will be a modern state-of-the-art facility to cater for current and future demand and greatly improve the swimming and health and fitness offer, as well as library facilities. It will include a new 100 station gym and refurbished swimming pools, a brand new and bigger library, a new crèche, along with a café and flexible community space for other public and community services, such as such as the Citizens Advice, adult day care and disabled sports.
By bringing services together under one roof, the new facility will reduce running costs, while providing more flexible services to customers, such as longer opening hours for the library and citizen’s advice.
Whilst the library at Vernon Place will remain open through the build process and it is ‘business as usual’ there, Dunstable Leisure Centre closed in June for a period of 18 months to start the redevelopment work. Wates Construction is carrying out the partial demolition of the leisure centre and reconstruction of the new leisure facilities, library, day care and citizens advice. The contractors will typically be working Monday to Friday, 08.00 until 18.00. They won’t be working on Saturdays unless there are exceptional circumstances.

The demolition works are progressing well and are on schedule. In July the contractors arrived on the site and installed security systems and perimeter hoarding, as well as undertaking surveys in the building. Externally they facilitated an archaeological excavation in the old car park at the front of the leisure centre.
During August the contractors removed the existing pool tiling, and commenced the external demolition. In September the contractors moved into a new site office on the corner of Grove Court. The old Dunstable Leisure Centre site is now completely enclosed, with a hoarding on all sides and security measures installed to prevent access out of hours.
CBC are keen to thank residents and leisure centre users for their co-operation and understanding throughout the redevelopment. The contractors operate under the Considerate Constructors Scheme. So if you have any issues with construction operations, please feel free to contact the contractors directly on site or by phone at 07713 912098.
Through regular notices and updates on the Central Bedfordshire Council website, residents can keep up to date on the progress of the project and the council We will be reporting on progress via a time-lapse camera that is on site and recording all activity.
